Hello friends! If you missed the launch week events for Velocity Weapon, there's one more this month (and another later in the year, more on that later) at the Bookbinder's Museum in San Francisco. I'll be in conversation with Vylar Kaftan on July 21st, doors open at 6pm. More info on SFinSF events can be found on their site here: http://www.sfinsf.org/

January Mid-Month Round-Up
Updates
These past few months have been rough on many people around the world, myself included, but I do have some good news to share. The third book in the Scorched Continent Series, Inherit the Flame, has been turned into my publisher! I am only awaiting copy-edits, and then it's on to the presses. I believe the release date is tentatively set for April of this year.

The Business of Art
Thursday 15:00 - 16:00, 2208 (Kansas City Convention Center)
You have the talent and passion to create art, but your job's only half done when the last stroke, edit or nail goes into that piece. What challenges does the business present? Panellists examine establishing current client relationships, multiple streams of revenue, making inroads into the gallery market and breaking into film. Successful artists discuss managing the non-illustrative aspects of their career.
The Very Pulse of the Machine
Thursday 17:00 - 18:00, 2503B (Kansas City Convention Center)
"The Very Pulse of the Machine" (1999, M. Swanwick): Cyborgs, AI, Droids, science fiction is filled with machines which might as well be alive since they are as much characters as any of the humans/aliens in the works. Authors (and robotocists? programmers?) discuss the reality of creating actual intelligent machines, which may or may not be able to pass a Turing Test, but which have personality.

Is Artificial Intelligence Dangerous?
Friday 15:00 - 16:00, 2505B (Costume) - A/V (Kansas City Convention Center)
"Giant Robot Menace!" "Soulless Machine Decides Humanity Is Obsolete!" These aren't the headlines of the future, they're the headlines from the past. Join us as we question whether artificial intelligence is dangerous and whether its benefits outweigh the threat to humanity.
The Future of Food
Friday 17:00 - 18:00, 3501F - A/V (Kansas City Convention Center)
As part of "The Future of" series we look at Food.
Food scarcity is a global issue, food poverty is a growing issue in affluent countries where food is not scarce but wealth is increasingly divided. Food technology in production and farming methods continue to change and develop. Our panel considers some of the serious issues that impact upon the future of food and ask whether we really expect to be eating food from the yeast vats, artificially grown meat tissue or whether we will all become vegan.
